The 2017-2018 Chesterbrook Elementary yearbook theme is “Decades: 1950s to Today.”

Chesterbrook parent Tim Steeg put together the historical timeline that will appear in the upcoming yearbook.  

Timeline of Chesterbrook, Virginia and Chesterbrook Elementary School

1865 – After Civil War, many freed slaves settled in the area, calling it Lincoln Village (Lincolnville).

1866 – First Baptist Church was built across from present-day Chesterbrook Elementary

1870 – Fairfax County Public Schools was established with 28 schools for white students and 13 schools for African-American students

1897 – When a post office was established in the neighborhood, the area was renamed Chesterbrook

1906 – A One-room wooden schoolhouse was built near Linway Terrace

1906 – A trolley running from Rosslyn to Great Falls had a stop at Franklin Park.  With the advent of the automobile, the trolley closed in 1934 and the former track bed was converted into a road: Old Dominion Drive

1926 – The school was moved to its current location, having two classrooms, built of brick with indoor bathrooms and a coal heating furnace

1965 – Chesterbrook Elementary was desegregated

1970s – The 1926 school building was torn down and the gymnasium was built in its place

1970s – The school nickname changed from Chesterbrook Champions to Chesterbrook Chipmunks

One Chesterbrook Alumnus Frank da Cruz, who attended Chesterbrook Elementary in the 1950’s, has a photographical treasure box of pictures from the era, including a few from his yearbook.  We thank Frank for sharing a few of those photos with us!
